Here is an interesting article about the recent decline in the Google empire. In it describes the staggering traffic generated by Myspace and Facebook due to their appeal to a young demographic who has ample time to share photographs, music, blog entries, e-mails and most importantly links. Google’s social platform Orkut has failed to implement blogging or video features and now the company is hurting. Blogger, which Google bought 2003 has yet to propel the kind of traffic that its competitors have achieved. One competitor YouTube, a site funded by venture capitalists, has generated immense amounts of traffic by showcasing personal videos, live shows, although raising intellectual property discussion, has defintely increased in visibility and traffic. Recent statistics show that Google is third in overall traffic just under #2 Yahoo and #1, you guessed it Myspace.
Here are some staggering statistics from the C/Net article:
“In the last year, MySpace, which lets members include blogs on their personal pages, surpassed Google’s Blogger as the top social-networking site by Nielsen’s measure in the United States. In May 2006, Blogger had 20 million unique visitors, up 67 percent from May 2005. In contrast, MySpace drew 42 million unique visitors in May, up 329 percent from the same period a year ago, according to Nielsen.”
